Second Saturday on the Hill

Yeah that's right, we bet you are busy in the midst of holiday shopping pandemonium. While you are looking for that extra special gift, we have a few reasons to come down to Eastern Market this Saturday for Second Saturday on the Hill.

Our beloved Capitol Hill books will be holding a sale on books by Stephen Spender, this month's featured "Dead Author." All other books are reduced 10% and hardback mysteries are reduced 75%. Oh did we mention there is going to be free wine and cheese...

Other events include the "Wrap Up" sale at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, where 90% of sale proceeds go directly to the artists. Chateau Animaux will be holding a "Yappy Hour" from 6-8 for pets and owners. Also stop by the Hawk n' Dove for featured dinner specials.

It's a great excuse to come out and enjoy the joie de vivre lifestyle on the Hill.

Everything's Better on the Hill, Even the Weather

Hey Hill residents, have you ever noticed that the weather in our neighborhood always seems to be more temperate? Yesterday and Sunday's frigid temps only confirmed my suspicions that Capitol Hill has the best weather in DC. Upon leaving Metro Center and returning to Potomac Avenue on Sunday I felt a 5 degree increase in temperature and a significant decrease in wind. I spoke to several other Hill friends and they agreed with my observations, even noting that the Hill is cooler than other DC burroughs in the scorching summer. How did we get so lucky? Does anyone know why this happens? Is it due to our slight elevation above the city?

Internet Love: Capitol Hill Edition

In case you don't have time to peruse all the hundreds of Craigslist Missed Connections this city is posting, here's a summary of those in Capitol Hill. You're welcome.

As always, the Capitol Hill Results Gym is turning up a disproportionatly high number of Missed connections. Here's one from December 1st, and another from December 3rd.

Also from December 1st, here's a man seeking out the MPD officer he saw patting down some of his neighbors on the 1500 block of D St. SE.

Yesterday evening, this man and his dog both made eyes at a stranger on North Carolina Ave. SE.

Here's a new one. This woman is trying to meet up with an Eastern Market vendor. She not only posted on Craigslist for him to see, but also so that all the loyal CL readers could help pass along her message. Help this woman out!

Boozin': Miracle on Third and Fourth Streets

Nothing says HOLIDAYS quite like a bar crawl! This Saturday, December 6th, come celebrate the Miracle on Third and Fourth Streets!

Registration for the bar crawl runs from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Hawk 'n' Dove. The crawl is $10 unless you show up in holiday costume or with a donation for Toys for Tots, in which case it's $7. Once registered, you're free to walk, stumble, or crawl to Ugly Mug, The Pour House, Bullfeathers, Tune Inn, and the 18th Amendment to enjoy a number of discounts on all the holiday booze you could ever want.

It truly is a Christmas miracle!

18th Amendment Just Got Cooler

A Capitol Hill staple, 18th Amendment, has been serving up no frills food and drinks for years. Now the Pennsylvania Ave. bar is delving into the realm of live entertainment. According to their website the bar will soon be offering these events:

- Karaoke
- Open Mic Nights
- Piano sing along
- Jazz night
- Acoustic bands
- DJs

It's always exciting to have new events on the usually entertainment-starved Penn Ave. strip. Hold on, it just keeps getting better!

Good Morning Capitol Hill- 24 Hour Bars!!!!!

Here are some news updates that Hill residents might find interesting:

According to WTOP news, police have made 3 arrests in response to the Trinidad shooting spree of this summer. One suspect was arrested several weeks ago while two others were arrested on Tuesday. A fourth suspect is currently jailed in Prince George's County. Let's hope police can finally bring some peace to the Hill's closest neighbors, Trinidad residents.

And for all you politicos awaiting the Inauguration with bated, there is possibly more to cheer about. The DC City Council has voted to allow bars to stay open for 24 hours between January 17 and January 21. Now,It's all in the hands of Adrian Fenty who has to sign off on the bill. We have our fingers crossed!

SE Ain't So Scary- East Capitol St. Edition

I’m walking alone at night straddling the border of Southeast DC and I am paralyzed with fear. Two eyes glow from the tree. It’s a raccoon.

When you became a member of the district you become accustomed to the perils of DC: the overly ambitious type A DC twenty-something, the aggressive drivers, the Georgetown girls cranky from their lack of food and the weight of their shopping bags, the police who seem to have forgotten about the murder rate in DC and prefer to concentrate on jaywalking, the dreaded left side riders on the metro escalator and of course SE DC. But no one mentioned the raccoon.

And here I was, listening to Ipod, eyes pressed to the ground scanning for misplaced bricks in the sidewalk, just praying that my nocturnal stalker would go on his way. He won’t’ budge. He is a DC raccoon filibustering my evening jaunt. He has learned a few things from his neighbors. Ten blocks into the distance I could see the glistening white marble of the Capitol. I am walking down East Capitol St. straddling the border between Northeast and Southeast DC. All around me, beautiful 4 story Victorian homes line the street and stately oaks frame the sidewalks. The light from Grubb’s pharmacy, an old-timey apothecary shop, provides a spotlight for our showdown. I can smell the thick grease form Jimmy T’s two blocks down. If only I could proceed.

East Capitol St. isn’t your typical Southeast neighborhood. It should be called millionaire’s row. It’s home to senators, congressmen, doctor’s, lawyers and the picture perfect DC family. World’s away from Anacostia, this Southeast nonetheless suffers from it’s label. Try getting into a cab and asking to go to 6th and East Capitol SE, will always elicit a grown. Nestled behind the towering dome of our nation’s government, it’s a neighborhood forgotten- forgotten by tourists milling around the mall, forgotten by the night-time crowd and even forgotten by its own residents. A grand boulevard running from RFK stadium through the quaint Lincoln Park and dead ending at the Capitol, it is an urban oasis. When I walk here at night I feel a sense of community as people lounge in the park, stroll arm-in arm down the street and rake leaves in their 5x5 front yards. They are unaware that they live in the dreaded Southeast.

I am still staring at the raccoon, it’s becoming a battle of wills. From behind me I hear the gentle din of stroller wheels grinding on the pavement. The raccoon scampers up the tree and I am released. A sense of relief washes over me. It feels good to be here in Southeast DC, where my greatest fear is a raccoon.

For you Hill hipsters, stop by the Palace of Wonders http://www.palaceofwonders.com/home.htmltonight for the Live Humans in DC Open Mic. It's one of the rare chances you can enjoy live entertainment there without a cover charge.

Hello, Holidays!

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, you can truly dive into the Christmas season without fear of legitimate rebuke from all those Scrooges who seem opposed to the unseasonable display of holiday spirit.

So to fulfill your newly awakened holiday feelings, DC is lighting up some Christmas trees!

You may want to check out the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the White House on Thursday, December 4th. The president flips the lightswitch on this at 5:00 p.m. Tickets became available November 1st on a first come, first serve basis. Free tickets can be picked up at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion (15th and E streets NW). There's a limit of four tickets per person, and they are required for entry, even for children.

However, if you're anything like me, you don't like leaving the Hill (I mean, why would you every need to?), so to satiate your Christmas-tree-lighting lust without having to abandon the 'hood, there's always the Capitol Christmas Tree which will be lit at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2nd. The tree stands on the West Lawn at a height of 73 feet, covered in 10,000 lights and 4,000 handmade ornaments. This year's tree comes from the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana, according to the Capitol Christmas Tree 2008 website. There's also a website that allows you to track the tree during its voyage cross country. The tracker is less exciting now that the tree has made it to the Mall, but completely beautiful and worthless nonetheless!

Welcome to the legitimate holiday season, everybody!

AND
DOES HUMOR BELONG IN MUSIC? (1985) directed by Frank Zappa (57 minutes) – A live performance in New York City by Zappa’s 1984 band, arguably the best artists he'd ever assembled. For Zappa fans, this is a must.
